Drums of the World Comes to JCC Los Gatos!

AWO’s Drums Of The World program, offering engaging performances and workshops curated for youth and families, is coming to Jewish Silicon Valley’s JCC Los Gatos on August 28th, 2022. Click here for details.

AWỌ is a social justice organization whose mission is to create opportunities for those whose stories have been historically unheard or misrepresented. They use various forms of storytelling and support our efforts with the arts and culture.

The Drums of the World event opens an avenue for celebrating traditional practices that allow room for fresh perspectives and what this approach means for our HUEmanity.

ABOUT THE HUEmanity SALON SERIES

On Sunday November 14, 2021, spearheaded by Diane Fisher from Jewish Silicon Valley and many others, over 2,000 Los Gatos families, students, local nonprofits and cultural groups came out to march in solidarity with state, county and city government officials in the Los Gatos United Against Hate Rally.

AWỌ’s founder and executive director, Folake Phillips spoke at the event and was inspired to expand on this community effort to build a more welcoming and inclusive Los Gatos community that offers a feeling of true belonging for all.

I founded AWỌ in 2020 in response to the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minnesota police and the national street protests that erupted for Black Lives Matter in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. I had just recently migrated to the US and was confused and shocked at the deeper civic issues I was becoming aware of.

With a focus on innovative programs and educational resources, we engage people of all shades to share, learn and create a more complete and accurate narrative of HUEmanity.

These series help attendees gain experiential cross-cultural knowledge through listening, positivity and an open-mind.”

In addition to the August 28th event at the JCC Los Gatos, there is another event on August 27th on the Tower Lawn at SJSU

Jewish Silicon Valley is honored to host this incredible event developed by AWỌ. These types of opportunities help us combine and continue our aligned mission to continue building bridges of understanding and local solidarity, fostering community, inclusion and representation, and dismantling cultural silos.
