About Watch & Nosh Event
Taste the on-screen action; sample the depicted foods; go beyond the Ashkenormative and learn about Jewish and Israeli culture in this new take on “dinner and a show.” There’s Jewish and Israeli TV everywhere: from Shtisel and The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem, many of these Jewish stories are rich, relatable and nuanced. And what would Jewish stories be without food? At Watch and Nosh, we’re feeding your mind and body: we’ll watch TV clips of Jewish stories which feature food in a supporting role and feast on the foods we see on-screen. Go beyond bagels to burekasim, beyond gefilte fish to stuffed grape leaves — get a taste for how diverse Jewish stories and Jewish food culture can be. Aliza Grayevsky Somekh, a Bay Area based Israeli chef and food history enthusiast, teams up with Esther Kustanowitz, a Los-Angeles-based expert in the increase of Jewish portrayals on the small screen: together, they will present clips from TV and film and the Jewish foods that do—or should—accompany these scenes.
