Challah Bake Recipe 2024

Our Challah Bake 2024 recipe, for those finishing at home or for those following along at home. Share in the experience as we knead, braid, and bake our way to delicious, homemade challah.


  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbs dry yeast
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 3 tbs oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup flour (as needed)
  • glaze: 1 egg (beaten)


  1. In a bowl place yeast, warm water, and sugar.
  2. Mix well and let stand for five minutes.
  3. Add oil, the egg and mix well.
  4. Add salt and mix.
  5. Gradually, add flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing after each addition.
  6. As the mixture becomes stiff, begin kneading slowly.
    Add a little extra flour if needed.
  7. Knead for 7-8 minutes.
  8. Let rise until doubled in size – one-two hours.
  9. Punch down dough, divide, braid, and place on greased baking sheet.
  10. Once braided, allow to rise until larger in size – about half an hour.
  11. Preheat oven to 350°. Brush with glaze.
  12. Bake 30-40 minutes or until golden brown.
  13. Remove from pans and cool on racks. Do not separate challah or
    say blessing with this quantity.
