10:00 am - Opera Guild | Dialogues of the Carmelites
October 13, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
This opera by Francis Poulenc, based on a description of a real event that happened during the French Revolution, explores the relationship between the Reign of Terror, fear and religion. “Religion” here has two aspects: both as an antidote to anxiety and fear and as a faith that one cannot abandon, even onto death. The ”dialogues” of the title are not just words, Poulenc’s music makes them so much more, beautifully bringing the characters, their feelings and their viewpoints very much to life. Our lecturer is Michael Bragg, San Francisco Opera’s Music Planning Associate/Music Librarian and Bay Areas lecturer on music. Michael is, himself a singer, a tenor, who has performed in the major opera houses in the United States and Europe over a ten year career in which he was well known for performing the role of Mingo in Porgy and Bess over 200 times as well as performing new works and Wagner.
