A Bintel Brief: Sixty Years of Letters from the Lower East Side to the Jewish Daily Forward
Thursday, January 12, 2017
Presented by Rabbi Melanie Aron and Eleanor Intrator, LFCT
Between the 1930’s and 1950’s, if you were a Jewish immigrant on the Lower East Side and had a problem with your mother-in-law, your children, or your kosher butcher, there was no need to keep your grievances to yourself. Thanks to Rabbi Shmuel Aaron Rubin’s Jewish- American Board of Peace and Justice, you could pour your heart out on the airwaves. During the same time period, “The Binten Brief” had been a regular feature of the Jewish Daily Forward, a column which prints especially interesting letters from readers and answers them with thoughtful advice. The letters describe problems of adjusting to life in America, generation gaps in religious observances and matchmaking. Please join us for a lively discussion of the 20th century versions of Dear Abby and Judge Judy.
