The high rate of unemployment is no stranger to many of us. Our nation is suffering one of the longest and most severe recessions in its history. Though hopeful workers look to economic trends to slowly reinvent the American force, I believe all change, economic or otherwise, must be a result of human action.

The notion of green, sustainable jobs is that an individual does not merely deserve a job, but fairly waged employment, with reasonable overtime, safe conditions, and the ability to excel and progress in a company. These jobs ensure meaningful and appropriate employment for all, while building an improved economy, environment, and middle class.

There are a number of programs we can support to promote sustainable green jobs. Firstly, we can advocate for an extension of unemployment insurance. It is estimated that about 1.5 million workers have run out of unemployment at the turn of 2010. Extending benefits will revitalize the workforce hit hardest. Secondly, the Workforce Investment Act asks that the federal government to provide training to low skilled and low income workers. While the federal government debates the importance of training, education, and necessary skill sets, it is incumbent on local communities to provide training sessions for those in need. To that effect, Fighting Poverty with Faith is an organization who has made it their mission to work with interfaith groups to provide opportunities in job training and skill development for green jobs. Recently, Diane Fisher led such a job training in Silicon Valley, illuminating possible jobs at the Pipe Trade training center, the electricians training center, and VTA Solar.

Unfortunately, the green job revolution is already slower and bumpier than anticipated. The US is already anticipated to install only 1/8th of Germany’s new solar polar and less new wind power capacity than China. There are, however, a number of organizations, many here in the Bay Area, eager to create more of these sustainable jobs, as well as ensure a healthier environment with energy independence and clean air. A true “green” revolution promises more than a stimulated economy; it creates a foundation for national security and independence, independent of foreign oil.
