After a long, transition, the APJCC begins to experience revival

By Cecily Ruttenberg

In February 2004, just before Addison-Penzak Jewish Com-munity Center staff relocated to temporary offices to allow demolition of the old Oka Road buildings, the APJCC’s membership hit a low of 300 memberships.

By this time next year, however, settled in its new home at the Gloria and Ken Levy Family Campus, the APJCC aims to report approximately 2,000 memberships. By the following year, the goal is to hit 2,400 memberships. This compares to an all-time- high of 750 memberships in 2000. More

Staying Jewish through the summer

By Aliza Aziz

My husband and I were on our honeymoon, sort of. We’d gotten married the previous year over spring break, and with my husband still in graduate school, our lives revolved around the school year.

The following summer, we went car camping through northern Arizona – Sedona, the Grand Canyon, national monuments. As we absorbed the natural wonders of the sights around us all thoughts of the minutia of our everyday lives vanished. A short stay in Las Vegas, though, brought us back to reality, so to speak. We prepared for a weekend at the Grand Canyon Lodge at the North Rim by purchasing some items we would need: candles, challah and wine. More

Joel Fleekop joins Shir Hadash as assistant rabbi

On July 1, Congregation Shir Hadash of Los Gatos will welcome Rabbi Joel Fleekop as its new, full-time assistant rabbi.

The move is a significant step for Shir Hadash, which has been thinking of hiring another full-time rabbi for at least three years.
Fleekop, 26, was born and raised in Reno and Las Vegas where his mother was a volunteer and later paid educator in the Jewish schools. As these areas have a small Jewish community, Fleekop says he learned to value the synagogue as the center of Jewish life. Given the demographics of Nevada, Fleekop says he is also very familiar and comfortable with interfaith activities. More

There will be an astro-jump for the younger kids, games, raffles and prizes and many performances including jugglers, ballwalkers (some fresh from the Addison-Penzak Jewish Com-munity Center’s Summer Circus Camp), face-painters and balloon artists. This multi-generational experience will feature teen and BBYO hucksters staffing the midway games, seniors coordinating the culinary delights and families partaking in a colorful array of activities. Cotton candy and other treats will sweeten the afternoon which will culminate with a performance by Debbie Freidman. More
