Where are the men?

A recent newsletter put out by Temple Beth El in Aptos made a special plea for men to volunteer for the Chevra Kadisha committee, a group that prepares the dead for Jewish burials. According to Rabbi Paula Marcus, the group has ten women on the committee but only three men. “We have had male members pass away who we felt would have been more comfortable with a man preparing their body, but we need more male volunteers,” said Rabbi Marcus.

Yavneh students raise $820 for
Holocaust Torah project

How do you teach young children about tzedakah? How do you connect them to their history? Yavneh teacher and Congregation Beth David member Renée Fine accomplished both goals by asking the school’s students to raise money for the restoration of the Holocaust Torah that was brought to San Jose after being rescued from Poland during a March of the Living trip last April.

Silicon Valley honors 20 Women of Distinction

Women’s Philanthropy of the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley will host the 22nd annual Women of Distinction Ceremony at the Connections 2005 dinner on Thursday, March 10, at the Fourth Street Garage.

Twenty women will be honored for extraordinary contributions to Jewish life in Silicon Valley. Each of these women has given her time, resources and talents to ensure the viability of her organization. The accumulation of their efforts has resulted in a thriving, vibrant Jewish community.

Levy Campus nears completion

Beginning this March, the Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center will take reservations for weddings, b’nei mitzvah and other events at the auditorium of the new Gloria and Ken Levy Family Campus.
When the campus opens this summer, so too will the JCC’s brand new fitness center.


Alef Bet, a popular Silicon Valley Judaica store, is in negotiations to move into the ground floor.

Excitement is building for the grand opening.

“The shell is up, the interior is started, it’s looking beautiful,” said Bernie Kotansky, project manager and past president of the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley.

SVYAD hires new director

The Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley has hired Linda Park as the new Young Adults Division director. Linda worked for the past four years as a Jewish educator at several synagogues including Temple Beth Jacob in Redwood City. Before that, Linda worked in sales.


“I am excited to reach out to young adults – families, couples and singles, and organize fun and meaningful Jewish events,” Linda said. “I am also looking for young men and women who are interested in helping plan events and take a leadership role in the Federation.”
The next SVYAD family event will take place on February 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Roaring Camp Railroad in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
