Year End Giving
By Arielle Hendel

It is hard for me to believe that 2006 is almost over. If you are like me this year-end provides an opportunity to evaluate my Rosh Hashannah resolutions and get ready for (those dreaded) taxes. I am certain that you too begin to account for your finances and philanthropic choices.

Oddly, I feel fortunate to be able to make these decisions. Making a charitable contribution reminds me that I can; that there are those less fortunate than me who can benefit from even the smallest of gifts.
When I think about where I choose to donate, I evaluate the causes for which I feel most passionate.

In my case, I feel very strongly about Israel, children, education and women’s issues. I spend my time and my contributions to reflect my priorities. And, as you may guess, the bulk of my donation is to the Federation, but not only because I am the campaign director. I really believe in our system. I have seen first hand, here in our local community, in Israel and abroad how our contributions make a difference to the daily lives of people – real people. I choose to work at the Federation because it gives meaning to my life. Federation is an organization that epitomizes tikkun olam (repairing the world) , chesed (kindness) and tzedakah (charity) – those values which best support my priorities.

This past year, our Federation and others around the country have responded admirably to many crises. Our Emergency Relief efforts have allocated 100 percent of the dollars raised to those in need, be they in New Orleans, Thailand or Northern Israel. Our system’s efforts have been recognized nationally for their efficiency and efficacy.

The Annual Campaign provides food and shelter for the needy, education for our children, and care and compassion for the aging members of our community. In 2006, the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley raised over $10M in gifts to the Annual 2006, Campus Capital, Endowment campaigns and other philanthropic gifts. Administrative costs are only 10 percent, a low number in the non profit world. Each year the Jewish Federation distributes the proceeds of its annual fundraising drive to provide educational, cultural and social services through some 20 non-profit beneficiary agencies and programs.

So, why do I give to the Jewish Federation?

Because with just one contribution, I support an entire network committed to social justice and respect for human life. I get to support a wide variety of programs and services in the Silicon Valley, in Israel, and around the world. And, I can be thankful that I am fortunate enough to make a donation. In making my gift, I can set my priorities and count the blessings in my life that enable me to give.
