The Wines of Winter
Article courtesy of
Royal Liquor, San Jose

As the weather cools and the nights become longer, our tastes for food and wine change. Instead of lighter whites (Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio) and less tannic reds (Beaujolais and Merlot), we now desire full-bodied wines that warm the soul and stand up to hearty winter dishes. We trade in summer salads and lightly grilled foods for stews, hearty pasta and thick saucy fish and chicken dishes. As you light your fireplaces and fire up your stovetops this winter, consider uncorking some of the winter wines suggested below.

California
Baron Herzog Zinfandel Old Vines – This wine is sourced from older vines in Lodi and presents a rich concentration of flavors that stands up to meat dishes.

Israel
Segal’s Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve – This full-bodied, rich Cabernet with a lingering finish on the palate is from some of Israel’s best vineyards.

Chile
Alfasi Merlot – The sunny climate and cool ocean breezes of Chile’s Matua Valley produce a merlot with black fruit flavors and a hint of oak.

Spain
Ramon Cordova Rioja – Firm and focused with cherry and raspberry flavors, from Spain’s most famous wine region.
It is the gift season as well – Sabra Chocolate Orange Liqueur is a perennial favorite to go with your favorite desserts.
