“Paper Clips” principal to
Speak at Fed Annual Dinner
The Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley will hold its Annual Dinner on
Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007 at 6 p.m. at the Levy Family Campus. The dinner
is for Federation donors who make a minimum $1,000 family gift to the
Annual Campaign. Young adults affiliated with the Silicon Valley Young
Adults Division must give a minimum $500 gift to attend.
Linda Hooper, the middle school principal who inspired the famous “Paper
Clips Project” will be the keynote speaker. Longtime Federation
employee Janet Berg will be honored; and Karen and Al Guggenheim are co-chairing
the event.
Linda Hooper will speak about the development of the “Paper Clips”
Project, which began at Whitwell Middle School in Tenessee, where students
struggled to grasp the concept of six-million Holocaust victims. To help
their understanding, the students decided to collect six-million paper
clips. This amazing project changed the lives of the students, their teachers,
their families and the entire town forever. The project became the award
winning film, “Paper Clips.”
In Linda Hooper’s words, the “Paper Clips” Project has
been an affirmation of my beliefs that education is absolutely essential
to change; that evil must be constantly battled by education; that everyone
must study the past so that we do not forget nor repeat our mistakes;
and that there is a higher power guiding our destiny.”
