Jewish comedian to entertain at Aliyah dinner in January
“Does your mother call you in a panic whenever there’s a storm warning for your area? Does she act as though it’s her duty to alert you to every health story on the news? Have you ever been briefly out of touch with your mother only to find she’s phoned everyone short of the National Guard to track you down - or, just maybe, are you that mother?”
We have all heard about the stereotypical “Jewish Mother.” Some of us have one. Comedian Amy Borkowsky of “Amy’s Answering Machine: Messages from Mom” CD’s and book has made a career out of listening to hers.
Amy will be the featured speaker at Women’s Philanthropy’s Aliyah dinner on January 10, at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at the Levy Family Campus. The event, co-chaired by Sharon Samuels and Sue Leiter, is open to all women who make an annual gift of $365 or more to the 2008 Federation campaign. There are reduced annual minimum gift requirements for Young Adults ($180) and teens and college students ($36). A private reception with Amy Borkowsky will be held at 5:30 p.m. for women who make an annual gift at the Pomegranate ($1,800) or Lion ($5,000) level to the 2008 Federation campaign.
Amy shares more than a decade’s worth of maddening actual phone messages from her hilariously overprotective mother along with her own witty running commentary. She shares the equally entertaining inside story of how she turned all these years of maternal harassment and love into a comedic phenomenon that landed her national TV appearances from the NBC “Today” show to the CBS “Early Show” and interviews on hundreds of radio stations including National Public Radio.
Amy has performed at the Montreal “Just for Laughs” Festival, in Manhattan’s top comedy clubs, and has received international exposure including the BBC, French TV’s Canal Plus, Channel 4 in the UK, Canada’s Much Music, the French edition of Marie Claire and Australian Cosmopolitan. Mark you calendars and look for invitations and online registration in late November. Questions? Contact alyssia@jvalley.org or (408) 357-7433.
