BIRTHS


Renee Jacowitz & Brian Rogoff now have three sons: Benjamin Gabriel Rogoff joined the family on April 20. His older brother, Eli Zachary, 8, is in the third grade at Yavneh Day School and Ariel Judah, 4, attends Jewish Community Center Preschool in Los Gatos. The bris was perfomed by Chanan Feld at Sinai. Barbara & Larry Jacowitz, his maternal grandparents, live in Morgantown, WV, and Nydia & Gerardo Rogoff, paternal grandparents, live in Chelmsford, MA. His uncle and aunt David Jacowitz and Julie Shayne live in Edmonds, WA, with cousins Barrie and Aaron. Aunt and uncle Karina & Dan Ludwig and cousins Noah and Ian live in North Chelmsford, MA.


Steve & Arlene Greenberg, members of Emanu-El who recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary, were thrilled to welcome their sixth grand-chilon June 15. She is Sadie Marlowe Greenberg, daughter of Marc & Jenny Greenberg who grew up in San Jose and now reside in Petaluma. Sadie’s other grandparents are Dick & Gloria Selby, formerly of San Jose, who now live in Bend, OR, and great-grandmother, Cyril Weiss, who lives in Walnut Creek. Her aunt and uncle Karen & Ty Levine, who live in Los Altos, and uncle Lee Greenberg, who lives in the East Bay, were pleased to welcome a new niece into the clan.


Susan & Marc Robinson of Beth David were delighted with the birth of their granddaughter Eliana Sarah Robinson on June 17. She is the daughter of Dr. Seth & Davita Robinson who now reside in Sacramento where he is pursuing a fellowship at UC Davis in pulmonary medicine and critical care. Eliana was named at a lovely ceremony at Congregation Beth Shalom in Car-michael, CA. Eliana is also the granddaughter of Nancy Levin & the late Ivan Levin of Chicago, IL. Her great-grandfather Fred Robinson lives in Jericho, NY. Her uncle Adam Robinson lives in Los Angeles and her other aunt and uncle, Vera & Gere Hulteen live Chicago, IL. Eliana was named for Seth’s grandmothers and Davita’s grandfather.


Xander Barak Love, born on June 20, lives in Belmont with his parents Jennifer & David Love. His grandparents, Richard & Dorothy Dorsay of Saratoga are proud to announce his arrival and pleased to have taken him and his parents to Hawaii where he appeared to enjoy the surf. His other grandparents, Ron & Pat Love, live in Minnesota and his aunt, uncle and cousin, Aurianne, Adam and Avin Dorsay live in San Jose, CA.

CALLED TO THE TORAH


On July 15 Carter Johnson celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at Emanu-El. Carter is the son of Stuart & Sarah Johnson. He attends Chaboya Middle School in San Jose where his interests include soccer and anything concerned with computers. Nolan Johnson, 15, who attends Evergreen Valley High School, and Spencer Johnson, 9, who attends Laurelwood Elementary School were happy to participate in their brother’s ceremony. His grandmother Jean Quentin Baker came in from Milpitas and his other grandmother Nora Bruckheimer flew in from Denver, CO. Joani & Brian Johnson of Chicago, IL, and Rachel & Rick Davis of Sparks, NV, came to their nephew’s simcha.


Spencer Marsh, son of Missy & Jeff Marsh, was called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on July 8 at Emanu-El, San Jose. His brothers Joshua and Benjamin and many other friends and family from all over, including his grandparents Ruby & Sherman Warso of Morton Grove, IL, and his grandmother Faye Marsh of San Jose, enjoyed the event. Spencer is an 8th grade honors student at Quimby Oak Middle School where he is also the student body secretary/treasurer. He is a Boy Scout in Troop 251 and has attained the rank of 1st class. Spencer collected money from the flip tops on cans to benefit hurricane relief and still continues to collect them. He enjoys reading, playing video and computer games and playing with his brothers.


Hannah Gafter, daughter of Ricki Lee & Neal Gafter of Beth David, celebrated her Bat Mitz-vah on September 2. Hannah is a student at Miller Middle School in San Jose. She is interested in art and music. She hand painted her own tallit, and her tzedakah project involved saving all of her allowance and doing odd jobs in order to send $1,400 to the Jaffa Institute in Israel in order to sponsor another child’s Bat Mitzvah. Hannah has been active on both the junior and senior Kadima boards at Beth David and now serves as an aide for the Madrichim program. Those on hand for qvelling at the ceremony included her grandmother Estelle Gafter of Buffalo, NY, grandparents Sandy & Sheldon Davis of Cleveland, OH, and family and friends from Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, New York, Washington, Hawaii and Finland.


Joshua Steinberg, son of Leslie & Alan Steinberg, was called to the Torah at Sinai on September 2. He is a student at Chaboya Junior High and lists as his interests: soccer, acting and automobiles. His twin sisters, Rachel and Dani, who attend Matsumoto Elementary School, participated in his Bar Mitzvah service as did his cousins, Elysa and Kaylee Hill of Woodland Hills, CA. His grandparents, Henry & Anne Steinberg of Laguna Woods, CA, and Robert & Shirley Gottesman of Greenbrae, CA, were there for the ceremony as were his aunts and uncles Margie Baer & Jim Gottesman of Greenbrae, Nancy & Harold Mann of Greenbrae, Doreen & Ron Hill of Woodland Hills, CA, and Gerald Steinberg of Jerusalem, Israel.

WEDDINGS


David Joseph and Jennifer Beck celebrated their Uffruf at Beth David on August 12 and were married at Maison du Lac in Los Gatos by Rabbi Allan Berkowitz on August 20. Many close friends participated in the ceremony as did David’s sister Danya and Jennifer’s sisters Sara Beck of NY and Leslie Beck of MN. David &Jennifer met through Young Judea. He is finishing a PhD in psychology through the Alliant University in San Francisco. Jennifer is the director of the Jewish East Bay Coalition for Literacy. After a honeymoon in Peru the Josephs are living in Oakland.
Congratulations are in order for Adam & Lisa Litwin who were married on August 27 at Emanu-El. Adam is from San Jose, attended San Jose State U. and St. Louis U. He is the son of Ruth & Stan Litwin and the brother of Jason Litwin who participated in the wedding. Lisa Telamantez is from the Santa Cruz area. They are now living in San Jose.

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENTS


Cassie Blake, who graduated from San Jose State U. in May with a Bachelor of Arts degree in creative arts and a minor in music, finished up her role as lead singer in Great America’s Theater Production of “School of Rock.” In early September she flew off to New York City for an audition with Disney Cruise Lines. Her grandparents Leon & Beverly Avrech of San Jose and her parents Sherrie & Phil Blake are excited for her. She has been singing since she was four years old and has won many singing competitions.
