Congregation Emeth hires new rabbi
South
County’s Congregation Emeth has welcomed its new spiritual leader,
Debbie Israel. A third-year rabbinic student at the Academy for Jewish
Religion (AJR) in Los Angeles, Israel brings years of experience as a
Jewish educator and synagogue volunteer leader.
Before moving to the area, Israel served as president of her 500-member
synagogue, Congregation Brith Shalom, in Houston, Texas. She also acted
as Regional Director of Jewish Women International, and was the co-publisher,
managing editor and writer of Noah’s Ark, an international newspaper
for Jewish children with more than a million readers.
Israel has received many honors and awards, including Outstanding Alumnus
(B’nai B’rith Girls National Award); Distinguished Service
to Jewish Education (the Bureau of Jewish Education of Greater Houston);
and Rising Star Award for Outstanding Volunteer Achievement (B’nai
B’rith Women International).
Now a resident of Capitola – near the home of her daughter, son-in-law
and grandchildren in Santa Cruz –Israel and her husband, Jerry Dubin,
made the transition from Houston during the summer. They are excited to
become part of the vibrant, growing community of Congregation Emeth and
will participate in Emeth’s 30-year anniversary this year.
Congregation Emeth is affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism and
is based in Morgan Hill. It serves the diverse South County communities
of Gilroy, Hollister, San Martin, and South San Jose and welcomes prospective
new members.
