Jewish Community News Living Legacy: June 2004 Immigrant couple marks 60th anniversary Moisey Kagan and his wife, Esfir, celebrated an amazing accomplishment on April 23, marking 60 years of marriage, a remarkable feat in our society of divorces and remarriage. Originally citizens of the Soviet Union, they met for the first time as Moisey, a doctor’s assistant, escorted Esfir’s sister, whom he had met at a check point, home from the front during World War II. When they reached Moscow, Esfir’s home at the time, Moisey stayed with Esfir’s family for several days before moving on to visit his own in another city. On his way back to the war lines, he stopped again in Moscow and asked for Esfir’s hand in marriage. The next day they were married and then Moisey returned to the front. After the war, Moisey and Esfir traveled as Moisey continued his work as an army doctor. Living in the U.S.S.R. and traveling was difficult, but the couple stayed together and raised two sons. Today, Moisey and Esfir have five grandchildren, the eldest of which has herself been married for four years, and the youngest of which is a sophomore in high school. The couple has lived in the South Bay for the past 10 and a half years. Moisey continues to publish his findings and theories in medical journals, always trying to share his knowledge so that others may benefit from it. He remains independent and resourceful, qualities his army experience helped him develop. Esfir continues to support him in his endeavors as does their entire extended family, for whom this amazing marriage serves as inspiration, as does that of Moisey’s parents, which also lasted past the 60th anniversary mark. |
