Barbie-Jewish connection explored
By Marcia Klein
What does Barbie have in common with the Jewish people?
This poignant cultural question will be the subject of Women's Philanthropy’s
next outreach event in May.
On Monday, May 22 from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Levy Family Campus, Women's
Philanthropy will screen the independent short film, “The Tribe,”
as well as host its San Francisco-based filmmaker, Tiffany Shlain.
Ms. Shlain has created an 18-minute featurette that takes a witty and
original look at what it means to be Jewish in the 21st century. She has
paralleled this exploration with coverage of Barbie's life in America
-- not to mention that her cast for the film is made up of the iconic
dolls, along with news clips, archival photos, film clips and a dizzying
collage of modern-day images. It is only further enhanced by a selection
of slam poetry entitled “Hebrew Manita” by artist Vanessa
Hidary.
Ms. Shlain's work has been praised by the New York Times as “smart
and funny” and “The Tribe” is an official selection
of the Sundance Institute this year. Ms. Shlain is otherwise known as
the co-founder of the Webby Awards, the international honor recognizing
excellence in Web design.
Marcia Klein is chairing the event with the help of her committee: Wendy
Askenas, Alyssia Berkowitz, Cyd Braker, Fran Chevlen, Linda Mighdoll,
Lisa Milgram, Joy Oberman, Lori Passatt, Natalie Pogrebinsky, Rena Schochet
and Cara Vainish. If you would like to join the committee or you would
like additional information, please contact Arielle Hendel at arielle@jvalley.org
or 357-7501. Every woman from the community is invited to attend. $22
per person.
