Jewish Community News News: April 2004 Yom Ha’Atzmaut Israelathon April 27 The Jewish community of San Jose will celebrate Israel’s 56th birthday at the Yom Ha’Atzmaut celebration on April 27. This year’s event will include an “Israelathon,” a fundraising event to benefit families with young children living in Kiryat Malachi, Israel. “Israelathon” participants will seek sponsors and deliver donations to the Yom Ha’Atzmaut event. Individuals who participate in the fundraiser will have the chance to climb Masada (a rock-climbing wall), participate in an archeological dig in Jerusalem, go hula hooping in Eilat, and play paddleball in Tel Aviv - all without leaving San Jose! The money will be used to support Kiryat Malachi families
directly, and to throw them a party this summer with a puppet show, a
bazaar, local performances, and arts and crafts activities. The event
will be promoted as a gift from their Partnership 2000 sister city of
San Jose, California. Originally, it was a tent city for new immigrants known as Kastina Ma’abara. The eighth president of Israel, Moshe Katsav, emigrated there in 1945. In 1951, Kiryat Malachi, or City of Angels, was founded as a development town named in honor of the Jewish community of Los Angeles, which was tremendously supportive of its creation. Today, Kiryat Malachi is still a town absorbing thousands of new immigrants. During the 1990s the town absorbed more than 2000 new immigrants, mostly from Ethiopia. Community members who wish to participate in the Israelathon should begin collecting donations. Checks should be made out to JFGSJ - Kiryat Malachi. The Yom Ha’Atzmaut celebration will be held on Tuesday, April 27, at the Kehillah/Yavneh campus, 3800 Blackford Drive, San Jose. The Israelthon will run from 3:30 to 6:15 p.m., with the Yom Ha’Atzmaut celebration continuing to 7. |
