Jewish Community News JCN: February 2007 Middle School tuition discounts offered for Yavneh students
“We are so fortunate to have a dedicated group of
philanthropists to provide this program while we build a solid middle
school,” says Head of School Lori Abramson. “Fall 2007 will
see our dream come true - we will finally be a K-8 school with a fully-realized,
intensive, rich middle school program.” The school hopes that the grant program will encourage families who are currently in the public school system, to consider a Jewish day school education for their child for middle school. “Middle school is such a critical time for identity formation time and developing a sense of self,” says child psychologist Dr. Debra Mendlowitz, also a parent of a Yavneh student. “Moreover, a child's center of focus is changing from family to peers. Social pressures become very powerful and most do not yet have the critical thinking tools to handle them. A smaller, more accepting environment helps adolescents develop a good grounding. When they know themselves and where they fit in their world, they are much less vulnerable to peer pressure.”
