Mimouna Celebration on April 11 at Kehillah
JIMENA, Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa, will host
a community-wide Mimouna Celebration on Wednesday, April 11 from 7-9 p.m.
at Kehillah Jewish High School in Palo Alto.
The Mimouna is a joyous celebration corresponding to a Mediterranean springtime
celebration. Families decorate their home with flowers, orange blossoms
and stalks of green barley and welcome visitors to enjoy food and the
festive atmosphere. Hosts serve tea with mint and mufleta dipped in honey
and butter. Other symbols include fish for the parting of the Red Sea,
flour, milk, sheaves of grain and trays of fruit, dates and nuts, with
seven coins for plenty and prosperity. Traditionally, socializing continues
in the streets of the mellah, Jewish quarter, and friends are greeted
with the blessing, Tirbachu V'Tisadu, “Be Prosperous and Lucky”!
In Arabic Mimouna means “Good Fortune” and it was a way in
which Jewish Arabs in Morocco would reach out to each other after the
Passover holiday. The word mimouna is also linked to the Hebrew emuna
(faith) referring to the fact that the Jews continue to believe that they
will be redeemed from exile.
Today in Israel hundreds of thousands participate in the Mimouna festival.
Jews from Morocco proudly display their traditions and culture for all
to enjoy in Israel. This holiday celebrates the connection between the
diverse Israeli communities. Please join as Kehillah becomes “our
Moroccan Jewish quarter” where guests will go from “home to
home” to enjoy music, socializing and sweets!
The event costs $15 adults, $5 for children. At the door the cost increases
to $20 and $7. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call
JIMENA at (415) 977-7407.
Co-sponsors include Albert L. Schultz JCC of Palo Alto, The Israel Center,
the Bureau of Jewish Education, the JCRC of San Francisco, Peninsula,
Sonoma, Marin, Alameda and Contra Costa Counties and many of the South
Bay synagogues, Jewish Day Schools and Hebrew Schools.
