by Brett Borah Now that we are embarking on the construction of a new Jewish Community Campus which is scheduled to open in July 2005, people are asking what community agencies will be housed on the new campus. When they are told that the campus will be home to, among others, Yavneh Day School, Jewish Family Service, the Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Federation, the next question is what’s the difference between them. Yavneh Day School is a Jewish day school which provides secular, Hebrew and Judaic education for children in grades kindergarten through six, with grades seven and eight to be added in the next few years. Yavneh has approximately 130 students. The website is: www.yavneh-ds.org. Susan Ellenberg is the president. The Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley is a non-profit, fundraising organization with the mission of raising and allocating funds. It is the banker of our Jewish community – raising $2.3 million annually and $23 million for the Levy Family Campus. More than a dozen local Jewish agencies, as well as overseas organizations, receive funds. The Federation also acts as the central address for Jewish Silicon Valley providing a comprehensive calendar to avoid scheduling conflicts. The Federation coordinates community events such as Yom HaShoah, Yom Ha’atzmaut and Mitzvah Day. Over 3,500 members of our community contribute to the annual fund raising effort. The website is www.jvalley.org. The Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center provides for the social, cultural, educational and recreational needs of the Jewish community. The J.C.C. is the parent organization for the pre-school, the South Bay Institute lecture series and the Jewish Film Series. The J.C.C. has over 300 member families. The website is www.sanjosejcc.org. Ruth Fletcher is the president. Jewish Family Service of Silicon Valley is mandated with strengthening the quality of Jewish family life in the greater Santa Clara Valley. They provide vocational and employment services, E.S.L., counseling and social services for émigrés, seniors, families and teens. J.F.S. serves over 1,800 clients annually, many of whom are low income. Joe Sorger is their president. The website address is www.jfssv.org. |
