Israeli author at Beth David Feb. 15
Author Eva Etzioni-Halevy, professor emeritus of political sociology at
Bar-Ilan University, will speak at Congregation Beth David on February
15 at 7:30 p.m. She will discuss her new novel, “The Garden of Ruth,”
based on the biblical tale of Ruth the Moabite.
The book presents a gripping plot, combined with a feminist message about
strong and intelligent women who participated in the shaping and recording
of ancient Israel's history. Also enfolded in the story is a message of
tolerance regarding the proper manner of dealing with strangers in our
midst, and on the issue of intermarriage, as seen by our forebearers.
Book sales and signing will follow the lecture.
Etzioni-Halevy published 14 academic books and numerous articles before
turning to writing Biblical novels. Born in Vienna, Austria, she was fortunate
to escape in 1939 as a small child with her parents. She spent World War
II in Italy, partly in an Italian concentration camp and partly in hiding.
After surviving the war, she moved to what was then Palestine in 1945.
As part of searching for her roots, she returned to the religious orientation
she had previously abandoned. This seeking also led her to discover the
rich world of the Bible and to attempt to bring it to life for contemporary
readers. She lives in Tel Aviv with her husband.
The lecture is part of the Con-versations in Jewish Learning Series sponsored
by Beth David in partnership with Sharone Hadassah, Ner Tamid Lodge of
B'nai B'rith, and Brandeis Women's Committee of Santa Clara Valley. Admission
is free to members of sponsoring groups and $5 is requested of others.
