Orthodox Shul redefines itself Sephardic
In response to the ever-growing Jewish community of Middle
Eastern descent, the well-known San Jose congregation known as Ahavas
Torah has undergone a facelift: a new name, Ahabat Torah; a new nusach,
Sephardic; a new spiritual leader, Rabbi David Zitter.
Dynamic, friendly and highly knowledgeable, Rabbi Zitter has taught and
held rabbinic positions in Jerusalem and Budapest, Hungary. Moreover,
his versatility allows the shul to remain Ashkenazi-friendly. He prays
from a Sephardic siddur and announces the pages in the Ashkenazic one.
Upon moving to San Jose, Rabbi Zitter visited Ahabat Torah and immediately
recognized its warmth and potential.
Ahabat Torah has not only generated an interest in the Sephardic community,
it has seen an increase of Ashkenazim at its services.
Rabbi Zitter and Dr. David Lewis give lectures and classes on Shabbat.
After evening services on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday, Rabbi Noach Vogel,
Rabbi Zitter and Rebbetzin Zitter, respectively, offer classes open to
the public.
President Menashe David Taban notes that the Zitters are a great asset
to the community, having been brought to San Jose to teach at Eitz Chaim
Academy. They have found a special home at Ahabat Torah.
The Zitters are the parents of Mimi, 5, and twins Shimon Yichyeh and Yehuda
Zev, 2.
Ahabat Torah is located at 1537A Meridian Ave., in Carriage Square Shopping
Center, a little north of Hamilton Ave. Information about times of services,
classes, hospitality, etc., is available at 266-2342 or 264-3138.
