Orthodox lesbians struggle in ‘Keep Not Silent’ showing Mar. 8

Miriam-Esther fights her aversion to a man’s touch for the sake of her family and 10 children. Ruth’s husband permits his wife to see her female lover twice a week. Yudith, a rabbi’s daughter, declares her sexuality openly as she believes “lies are the worst sin on earth.”

“Keep Not Silent,” which will play at the historic Hoover Theater, 1635 Park Avenue, in the San Jose Rose Garden on March 8 at 7:30 p.m., presents a secret struggle for acceptance and love led by three lesbian women from Jerusalem’s Orthodox and ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods.

Each woman must choose between herself and her beloved, and each is torn between her need for a fulfilling life of love and her great fear of the grief she might cause her children, her husband, and her extended family. The personal fight for self-realization, honesty and acceptance is especially difficult given the religious laws against homosexuality and the probable consequence of excommunication. The film presents a truly human conflict, raising difficult issues of responsibility and freedom of choice.

Following the screening the filmmaker, Israeli director/producer Ilil Alexander, will lead a discussion. This movie won the 2004 Israeli OSCAR for Best Documentary.

The screening is sponsored by the San Jose Jewish Film Festival, the Israeli Consulate of San Francisco and the Billy De Frank Center. Advance ticket purchases are highly recommended. For tickets visit the San Jose Jewish Film Festival Web site at www.sjjff.org.
