Carol Harris

November 15, 2003, at age 61. A founding member of Congregation Shir Hadash, Carol had a love of jewelry making and a wide circle of friends. She is survived by her husband Jerry Harris of San Jose, daughter Julie Harris and her husband Etan Gumerman of Pittsburgh, PA, and son Charles & Isabel Harris of Irvine, CA. Mrs. Harris is also survived by her mother Lillian Block and brother David Block, both of Pleasanton, and 4 grandchildren, Noam and Jayden Gumerman and Tal and Yael Harris. The family suggests donations be made to Hospice of the Valley, the American Cancer Society or to the UAHC Camp Newman Carol Harris Memorial Fund, 703 Market St. Suite 1300, SF 94103.

Max Lettween, Sr

November 16, 2003, at age 92, of Des Moines, IA. Mr. Letween is survived by Max & Carolyn Letween of Saratoga, Charlotte Letween of Long Beach and David & Barbara Letween of Des Moines, IA, and 4 grandchildren. The family asks that donations be made to the Memorial Project Fund at Shir Hadash.

Bernard Nobler

November 19, 2003, at age 87, in Honolulu where he had resided since the 1970's. Born in Chicago, Mr. Nobler was stationed at Treasure Island when he served in the Navy during WWII, then settled and raised a family in Redwood City. An architect, he built theaters and office buildings in both CA and Hawaii, but was proudest of his design for Congreg-ation Beth Jacob in Redwood City. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-laws: Alan & Barbara Nobler of San Jose and Steve & Debbie Nobler of Honolulu, HI, 3 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Phyllis Frayda Shatz

December 12, 2003, at age 65. A speech therapist and audiologist, and for the past 12 years before her illness, Phyllis Shatz worked as the reading disabilities teacher for special education at South Peninsula Hebrew Day School in Sunnyvale. Born in MN, Phyllis was the daughter of Osna & Bill Goldstein, maintaining close contact with her large family throughout her life. In 1962 she married Sol Shatz with whom she raised two sons, Joel and Neil Shatz, who both live locally. A Santa Clara Valley resident for over 37 years, Mrs. Shatz served as president of Panama Elementary School PTA and of the Sisterhood of Congregation Beth David, where she was an active member for 35 years. In addition, she was a lifetime member of Hadassah and Brandeis U. Women and a member of Sol's Hidden Children Group for Holocaust Survivors. Mrs. Shatz worked with youngsters at Pine Hill School in San Jose, Harker Academy, and Keys School in Palo Alto as well as SPHDS. Sol established the Phyllis F. Shatz Memorial Fund for Special Children at Beth David, 19700 Prospect Rd, Saratoga, CA 95070, to continue her legacy and expand her life work in helping children reach their full potential.
