Rabbi Stephen Fuchs is the newly-appointed President of the World Union of Progressive Judaism, the international umbrella organization of the Reform movement, serving 1200 congregations with 1.8 million members in 47 countries around the world.
We are honored to welcome Rabbi Fuchs to Beth Am, and to learn about his vision for advancing Progressive Jewish ideals, study and practice around the world.
Prior to joining the WUPJ in July, 2011, Rabbi Fuchs served as the Senior Rabbi of Congregation Beth Israel in West Hartford, Connecticut, a synagogue founded in 1843 with a membership of nearly 1000 households. There he distinguished himself as a dynamic leader, focusing particularly on interfaith work and social justice. He also served as Adjunct Professor at the Hartford Seminary in Connecticut. Prior positions include serving as Senior Rabbi at Congregation Ohabai Shalom in Nashville, Tennessee and Rabbi of Temple Isaiah in Columbia, Maryland. After his successful career in the congregational rabbinate, Rabbi Fuchs fulfilled a lifelong dream in assuming the position of leader of the World Union for Progressive Judaism.
