Women's Philanthropy Miriam's Cup 2005 Painting Party!

Over 50 women gathered at Artopia in Cupertino to learn with Rabbi Leslie Alexander about Miriam’s Cup and to then paint their own version of the goblet. Rabbi Alexander shared the history and liturgy around this emerging tradition based on the biblical Miriam.

Miriam’s Cup is now used in many Passover seders to signify women’s role in Jewish history. Miriam, you will recall, is Moses’ older sister who places him in the Nile to be saved from infanticide and raised by the Pharaoh’s wife.

Miriam is also credited in several texts for her part in the parting of the Red Sea and securing a water source for the trek through the desert. Water is often the conduit of her good deeds and as such and in juxtaposition to Elijah’s cup which is filled with wine, Miriam’s Cup is filled with water. And, while we always look for Elijah’s cup volume to lessen in order to show his arrival, Miriam’s Cup is continually filled during the seder symbolizes the miracle of Miriam's well, which sustained the Israelites during their long journey in the desert. Miriam's Cup symbolically holds the healing waters of Miriam's well and represents redemption.
