60 Dinners for Israel@60 Blog

Dale and Robert Bergman - April 13

Dale hosted our diner this evening.  We had 9 people -

Dale and me
Richard and Charna Ravich
Richard and Charna's friend Barbara
Davida Rosenbaum and Andrew Spiciarich
Amy Johns and Nahum Shadmi.

Nahum is Israeli and Richard may be working in Israel for IBM for a 2 or 3 year assignment, perhaps as soon as this summer.

The menu included chicken and beef kabobs, couscous, tabouli, Israeli tomato salad, and Israeli wine.  For desert we had halvah and baklava.  Everything was delicious.

Shelley Timmins - March 28

We celebrated this Shabbat by packing 15 Young Adults into Shelley's apartment for a cozy potluck dinner. After the blessings over a bottle of Bartenura Moscato and some of the best Challah in the Bay Area, we noshed and schmoozed until we were farmatert (tired). Among the conversations with our resident Israelis (Neta and Orly), we learned about everything from MASA and Birthright programs to Israeli pop music and Arabic slang. Did we enjoy ourselves? B'rur!

Howard and Renee Fine - March 14

Shabbat dinner at Howard and Renee Fine's house being joined by Helaine and Steve Green, Stuart and Julie Krigel and family, and Lenny and Carmel Greenberg and family.

Len and Pearl Rosenthal - March 2

Forty guests enjoyed lunch at Viva's Restaurant on Sunday March 2, to celebrate Israel's 60th anniversary.  David Meir-Levy spoke about his new book, History Upside Down:  The Roots of Palestinian Fascism and the Myth of Israeli Agression.  The group took turns telling stories of their travels to Israel, from tours to teaching children.  All were happy that their gracious hosts, Len and Pearl Rosenthal, had brought them together to mark this important moment in Israel's history.

Susan Sweedler - February 29

My family hosted three other families, including one Israeli family, as part of the 60 Dinners for Israel@60.  There were seven adults, two teens, three tweens, three kids and a toddler all talking, laughing, eating and celebrating Shabbat together.  It was amazing how, though we all came from different geographic roots, our paths were not so different.

While attending graduate school at Yale, it turned out the Israeli husband was on campus at the same time my husband was at Yale as an undergraduate.  Then, working for the UJC in Boston, he worked at Brandeis University while I was there.  Small, small world.  Jewish geography -- one degree of separation!!!

The adults and teens enjoyed a variety of conversation topics including politics (some were ardent Obama supporters), Jewish camp experiences, books, Israel and home remodelling projects.  The children played games and giggled most of the night in the kitchen and bedrooms.  They rarely appeared in the living room/dining room where we were.

Of course, it would not be a Shabbat supper without food -- and lots of it!  If I had to rate the company and the experience, it would be a 10!  I am glad Diane hooked us up.  We look forward to spending more Shabbatot with our friends -- new and old -- from the night of February 29th.
